NEWCASTLE ROAD RACE

On Sunday the 17 January 10 the Checkers & Waterside Cycle Challenge took place in Newcastle at the Waterside Wimpy. We drove up the day before so we didn’t have to get up too early on Sunday.

It was drizzling when we woke up and it made the road very slippery. We started off slowly and by the top of the first hill there was a break away of three people Myself, Keagan and Rochelle.

We had to ride on the N11. The road was not closed to traffic and there were lots of trucks on the road. The course was very hilly. At the turn around point there were policemen controlling the traffic.

I had to do the 25km race to get league points. At about 1km to go there was an attack and I got dropped but I still finished second overall. I enjoyed the race and will do it next year.

AMASHOVA
Added 21 October 2009

On 18 October 09 the Amashova Road race was held. I did the 106km race for the first time. I went off in the under 16 bunch. The road was wet when we started but thankfully it was not raining. It was however still cold when we started at 7:20am.

At the top of Fox Hill a fast bunch came past me and I sat with them till the bottom of Inchanga. When I was going down Botha’s Hill the person in front of me came off and a few minutes later the ambulance was going towards him.

I “blew” at 80km and then rode slowly the rest of the way. The course was mainly down hill but the ups were difficult. I rode it in a time of 3h 33min 19sec.

When I was coming into Durban it started raining lightly for a while but then stopped. I got a little bit sunburnt.

The course was only 104km but I was tired at the finish. I enjoyed the race and will do it next year and hopefully get a better time.

MARGATE CENTENARY CYCLE CHALLENGE
Added 17 September 2009

On Sunday 6 September the Margate Centenary cycle challenge was held. We drove down on Saturday and stayed at the Margate hotel.

The start was right outside the hotel so we did not have to travel to the start and we were able to do our warm up in our room. I entered the 60km road race.

It was the first road race in spring and it was very hot and dry. I knew I had to drink a lot. The course was flat and fast and there was no road closer.

There was meant to have been a neutral zone from the start to the freeway, but we could not keep up with the car so we went hard from the word go. I rode with an adult most of the way.

The first bit of the course, to the first turn around was mostly flat and down with one up hill. I rode a time of 2h 3min 40second. I enjoyed the race and will hopefully do it again next year.

At prize giving I won a lucky draw. It was a voucher worth R750 to the local bike shop.
