Kona Bikes

Maverick Cycles are one of the exclusive Kona dealers in South Africa and can provide you with every single bike they make. This is an advantage, as limiting the range we bring in would limit the customer base we can serve. Kona’s range is so diverse that even trying to work out a target market would be near impossible. Keeping it simple is one of the values we share with Kona, that’s why if you want a kid’s Makena, a racy Kula or Stab, a road-going Zing or a commuting Dew, we can provide.

First up is the kid’s range, coz they’re the future for all of cycling. The 20” Makena has shocks up front, 7 gears out back and tons of fun all round. The Hula 24” is a bit bigger, and adds up to 24 gears, for the adventurous kids out there who want to keep up with mom and dad. There’s even a Kula 24” for the kids who drop the parents up the hills. It runs a Deore/SLX 9-speed group and  hydraulic discs.

The Backcountry range starts with a Blast, alu frame, dart fork and Deore bits. One up is the Cinder Cone, upgrading to hydraulic discs, Sun rims and SLX shirting at the rear. And the Caldera with a Tora fork, FSA Crank and XT rear derailler.

The Dawg range is the original backcountry trail bike. 6” of travel in a solid scandium frame with proper trail riding geometry. Starting off with Deore parts and RockShox suspension on the Dawgma, all the way up to the XT spec’d, Fox sprung Dawg Supreme. This is the bike that started the Trail riding craze.

We put our Team riders on Kona for a reason. The XC race Kula hardtails and Hei Hei 2.5” full sus bikes, use Scandium alloys, which are up to 50% stronger and 15% lighter than Aluminium. The geometry of the bikes is a little bit different to the rest of the chasing pack. It worked back in the day, it works now and it will always work. Built light with solid parts, these bikes will make the podium.

Kona also offer the Hei Hei 29er, bumped up to 3.5” of bounce but with the same solid parts and geometry. There’s also a hardtail 29er range, called Kahuna. And shares the same qualities as the Kulas but with those big wheels.

The downhill Stab has proved this, taking home 2 World Champs Jerseys. 8” keep the rubber side down, adjustable geometry keeps it stable, and Kona’s DOPE floating calliper system bring the speed down if you get in over your head.

If you’re not at the front of the Elite Race pack, try out the One20. 5 inches of 4-bar suspension with a more relaxed setup, aimed at the guys who spend quality time in the saddle enjoying the view. It’s still light enough to race, but it’s got extra bounce.

For the Ladies, Kona has the One20 and Kulas in a Lisa version, which means a shorter top tube, lower stand over, and ladies specific saddle, grips, bar and paintjob.

Kona has freeride covered with the iconic Stinky range. 7” front and rear, 1,5” headtube to keep the steering spot on, these bikes are capable of going bigger than big. Marzocchi suspension and RaceFace cranksets all round. The stinky runs Deore and SLX, and slows down on Hayes Stroker Trails. The Stinky Deluxe rocks XT, Stroker Aces and Mavic Crossline wheels. The top Stinky Air shows off Marzocchi 66s, a Fox DHX Air, and mixes up XT and XTR, with Saint Brakes.

Slopestyle is huge these days, and the best riders out (or up) there ride Kona. The steel framed, rigid, one-geared Shonky is the street king. The legend John Cowan has a bike named after him. Marzocchi fork, Sun Rims, E-Thirteen chainguide, the works. The Bass (after Paul Basagoitia) is the full sus version of the Cowan.

Finally, possibly the most diversely talented bike in the range;the CoilAir. Take one part Dawg, one part Stinky, and mix with Kona’s latest piece of genius, the Magic Link. On the ups this bike is as light and rideable as the Dawg, with its 6” of suspension and pedalling efficiency. On the downs, and with the shift in body weight, the Magic Link compresses, slackening the geometry and lengthening the wheelbase, like the Stinky. Its like having both bikes with you on the trails.

Availible in the CoilAir, with Deore/SLX, the Deluxe with SLX/XT, Fox 36 and RP23 shocks, and Mavic Crossline wheels, or the top-end Supreme, Rolling on XT, Fox 36 and RP23, Crossmax ST wheels and RaceFace components.
